When I first started Direct Assist Online, my biggest obstacle was face to face marketing. It frightened me to such an extent that I would literally have panic attacks! Like most small business owners, I started with a tight budget and I couldn’t afford to hire someone to market my business. I also had reservations about paying someone to do my marketing without knowing how and if the job would get done.
I found myself in the very same position you may be in… I was sick of working from 9am to 5pm and ready to start something of my own. It was do or die time!
Catch-22 but what to do?
In search of a solution, I turned to the internet to see if I could find a way to market my business and find customers online. Online marketing was a way for me to avoid face to face interaction, but still communicate with potential customers. It was still years before the ‘social media explosion’, when I stumbled upon a few online forums and social networking communities. Being curious by nature, I decided to join a few of these communities to see what they were all about.
For a while, I simply watched and listened to the conversations being conducted in the virtual world. My intention was to gain an understanding about the type of people that made use of online communities as well as observe the manner in which people interacted and connected with each other. On a daily basis, I would spend time going through blogs and find ways to comment on topics I had an interest in. In a short space of time, I started connecting with others and my network began growing.
So you networked online, but how did it help you find customers?
For me, at this point I still did not have any customers, yet I knew that I could not afford offline marketing. Trying to find customers online only cost me time, which was something I could afford at that stage, so I pressed on. As I continued to grow my online voice, I noticed that a few of the people I was networking with became my advocates – they began sharing information about my services and this resulted in customers actually finding me!
My online escapades also helped me achieve a high ranking on Google. I was incredibly surprised when people started approaching me with the introduction that they had found me on Google! |
So what does this mean for you and your business?
The reason I just shared my story is because like you, I’m a business owner too. I have the same worries, fears, pressures
and concerns about growing a successful business. As a business owner, I know and understand how important it is to find and keep customers.
To date, I have not done any offline marketing and I now run a successful social media virtual assistant business where I help other businesses to maintain and increase their online visitiblity.
